Dr. Martin Holdt , senior pastor of Constantia Park Baptist Church in Pretoria, completed his time of ministry here on earth and was promoted to Heaven on Saturday, 31 December 2011.
Martin Holdt was one of South Africa’s most dynamic prayer warriors and Gospel preachers. On 25 December, he preached at a church plant. On Tuesday, 27 th December, he underwent medical tests and was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic and liver cancer. On Saturday morning, 31 st December, he went into a coma and went to be with the Lord in the last hours of 2011.
Martin Holdt was converted at age 19, and was soon called to the ministry. After studying at Baptist Theological College in Parktown , Johannesburg, he embraced the doctrines of Grace and for more than four decades served churches in South Africa, several of which he planted. All who knew Martin Holdt were impressed by his depth of dedication to the Lord, he was plainly a man of fervent prayer, a bold Gospel preacher and a kind and compassionate friend.
Martin Holdt was a dynamic Bible preacher who blessed and challenged many listeners of Radio Pulpit for over 20 years. He was a Contributor to JOY! Magazine, the driving force behind the formation of the Reformed Baptist Association and the launching of the Reformation SA Magazine.
I first heard Rev. Martin Holdt preaching at Cambridge Baptist Church in East London. His dynamism in the pulpit and thoroughly Biblical messages impressed me. Dr. Holdt faithfully proclaimed the Gospel and Bible doctrines in conferences and churches throughout South Africa, in Zambia, in Britain , in the USA, Canada and at the Calvin 500 celebrations in Geneva, Switzerland, 2009.
He will be warmly remembered as a gracious and thoughtful friend and steadfast advocate for the Reformed Faith. We praise God for his deep and abiding ministry of the Word. Dr. Martin Holdt wrote the Foreword forCharacter Assassins – Dealing With Ecclesiastical Tyrants and Terrorists and he wrote the Introduction for The Greatest Century of Reformation.
He was the driving force behind the Grace Ministers Conferences and president of the Afrikaans Baptist Seminary. At the funeral service, 6 January 2012, Pastor Holdt’s son, Jonathan, who is studying at the Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, gave a powerful tribute to his father’s prayer life, faithfulness and preaching.
By God’s grace he can say: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the Faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
