19 October 2005

Dear Sir
Your article “When Italy Invaded Ethiopia …70 Years Ago” (October 2005 New African) was most interesting.
May I also suggest that the Battle of Isandlwana in 1979 when the Zulus defeated a British army, also deserves to be mentioned along with the Ethiopian defeat of the Italians at Adowa in 1896 as one of the most important defeats recorded by an African people against European invaders.
Also, it needs to be added that not only did Ethiopia suffer under Fascism in the 1930’s, but under Marxism in Mengistu’s Red Terror massacres of 1974 to 1991. Literally millions of Ethiopians lost their homes in the brutal forced removals, thousands of churches were destroyed, and millions died in the man-made famine. Also the Royal Family of Emperor Haile Selassie was murdered by the Communists.
It would also only be fair to mention that it was White South African troops who librated Abyssinia from the Italian fascists in 1941.

Yours sincerely
